Shannon Gaels U-8 Blitz 2011

posted Tue 27-Sep-2011 11:46 AM EST by Sean Price

Wow!  What a day for Shannon Gaels on Sunday.  A day of football that will be talked abut for years to come.  The winner on Sunday was most definitely Football.

C Division

The C team battled hard all day, were very unlucky not to beat St Barnabas.  Celtics v's St Barnabas in the final and what a final!  There was nothing between them at the final whistle so an extra 5 minutes was played with Celtics winning out in the end.  A special thanks to Mike McFadden and all who helped out on the C field, especially Mr.Referee himself Benny Reid (who I thought was from Tyrone not Armagh).  Thanks to the Corridan Family for the Gooch Cooper Cup.

B Division

The B team were in a very competitive division, but never stopped trying.  They reached the semi final but were beaten by the overall winners St Barnabas.  Full credit to John Dobey and all his crew on the B field and especially to the ref. Breffini Smith.  Thanks to the Foy Family for the Liam & Margaret Feeney Memorial Cup.

A Division

The A team was split into two teams and it proved to be a great idea.  There is never much between Rockland and Shannon Gaels and yesterday was no exception.   Shannon Gaels Ulster and Rockland drew in the first game.  Shannon Gaels Ulster and Shannon Gaels Connaught drew and Rockland beat Shannon Gaels Connaught by 3 points.  The semi final put the two Shannon Gaels team against each other with Shannon Gaels Ulster squeezing out a late win by 2 scores.  Rockland beat Celtics in the other semi final.  The best wine was kept to the last and when the final whistle blew we had a draw.  An extra 10 minutes was needed to separate these two great teams with Shannon Gaels proving stronger to win in a scoreline of 8 points to 4.  It's never easy against Rockland but yesterday we had stars all over the pitch and when they were called upon, they dug deep to win.  Congratulations to Stephanie Mathers (with a little help from her husband) for a job well done.  Also to Stephen Foy and the Dub Declan Kavanagh for coaching Shannon Gaels Connaught, who I'm sure would also have beaten Rockland had they reached the final.  Thanks to Robert Corridan for doing a great job reffing the A division.  Thanks to the Price Family for the Mike Price Memorial Cup.  It's great to see the cup in a Kerry household, well done Captain Fantastic Liam Martin, you saved the day for us yesterday.

A special mention to the Dobey family for winning the 50/50 raffle and for donating half back to the Shannon Gaels Club.

There is nothing Shannon Gaels as a club cannot achieve, this was obvious to be seen yesterday.  From picking up garbage, to timekeeping, putting up goals, reffing games, running to home depot, distributing pizza, taking photos, video taping games, live match commentary and putting everything away at the end, nobody said 'NO'.

From Shannon Gaels U 8 Management - Thanks to everyone for job well done!
